Your best leads call or WhatsApp: tracking numbers or tap counts first?

The short answer

Should a Dubai clinic or broker site buy call tracking numbers, or count call and WhatsApp taps first?

Count taps first. Tag the WhatsApp button, the call button and the form, and read them by campaign against your lead log. A tap shows intent, not an answered call. Buy tracking numbers only when answered calls are your main source and each job is worth it. At Mindcat, we run a Monday test before we quote.

Takeaways

  1. 01Count three actions in this order: the WhatsApp tap, the call tap, the form submit. Match them to your lead log.
  2. 02A tap is intent. It is not an answered call, and a website cannot see inside WhatsApp.
  3. 03Buy tracking numbers when answered calls are your main source and each job is valuable, not before.
  4. 04Mindcat Analytics counts taps on up to five tagged buttons per website. It sells no tracking numbers and does not record calls.

If your best leads arrive as a phone call or a WhatsApp message and your report cannot say which ad sent them, this is for you. It is not for a site nobody reads a report from, or a business whose calls all go to a call centre that already records the source.

What should a Dubai site count first?

Count the three actions your sales desk can match to a lead log, in this order: the WhatsApp tap, the call tap, the form submit.

That is our rule. It rests on one fact about each action. A tap is a signal that someone meant to reach you, and a website can see it. What happens after the tap, a ringing phone or a chat window, happens somewhere your website cannot see. So the report you build first is about taps, by page and by campaign, and the lead log is the check on what the taps turned into.

Samverse, a guide for small businesses, gives the same order (published 28 September 2026, updated 28 October). Its advice: "track clicks on call and WhatsApp buttons in analytics, and ask every caller how they found you, before paying for tracking numbers." It is written for India, where it notes that many customers "prefer to call or WhatsApp rather than fill a form". The habit is the same in a Dubai clinic or a broker's launch site.

Count the tap first: WhatsApp tap, call tap, form submit, then match each to your lead log
Count the tap first. Buy a tracking number only when answered calls lead.

What does a tap tell you, and what does it miss?

It tells you intent, and it misses everything after.

A guide from Vasuyashii (29 March 2026, updated 23 July) draws the line in one sentence (a tel: click is a tap on a phone number that dials): "A tel: click is measurable; the completed call usually requires a separate call-tracking provider or CRM process." It splits the chain into steps. A phone tap is website intent. An answered call is telephony evidence. A qualified lead is CRM or sales evidence. Each step has its own place to be counted.

WhatsApp has the same gap. Tony Helmy, who writes on analytics, puts it plainly in an October 2026 guide: "Your website can see the click on the button. It can't see what happens inside WhatsApp." He adds that Meta provides no analytics for these links, so "the counting happens on your side". His fix is cheap: one link per placement, each with its own opening line, so the first message tells you where the chat came from.

Samverse says the same about the tap itself: "A click is not the same as a completed call or chat, but it is a strong signal."

So a tap count is useful and incomplete. It answers "which page and which campaign got people to reach for the phone". It does not answer "how many calls did we pick up".

A tap is the only step your website sees; the call, the lead and the customer show in your phone line and lead log
A tap is the only step your website sees.

When is a tracking number the right buy?

When answered calls are your main source of business and you need to know which campaign rang.

Call tracking services rent you virtual numbers that forward to your real phone. A different number per campaign, or one that the website swaps in depending on how the visitor arrived, tells the service which source each call came from. Samverse lists four cases where that is worth considering:

  • Calls are your main source of business and each job is valuable.
  • You spend on several channels and need to know which to keep.
  • You run offline advertising alongside online marketing.
  • Several staff take calls and you need a shared log and missed-call alerts.

It also warns about a cost people miss. Search engines and directories use your name, address and phone number to confirm who you are, so swapping your main number everywhere can make your listings inconsistent. Keep your main number as the primary one on your Google Business Profile, and check the platform's current guidance before adding a tracking number.

A Dubai clinic where the front desk answers every call and each new patient is worth real money can fit the first case. A broker's launch page where the leads arrive on WhatsApp fits none of the four. Tell the two apart before you pay a monthly fee for numbers that your WhatsApp leads never use.

Why not let the click drive your ads?

Because a button tap is cheap, and an ad platform will find you more of whoever taps.

McAllister Digital, a UK agency, wrote in September 2025 that "If you optimise for clicks alone, you teach Google to find people who tap the button rather than engaged users who are more likely to enquire." It looks good in the platform, it says. That is a warning about bidding, and it applies in Dubai as much as London.

Our line follows from it. Use tap counts to read campaigns, and keep a lead log for the number that matters. Say the log shows 12 enquiries and the taps show 40. A tap that never becomes a message is normal, so a gap is expected. Watch whether it stays steady from week to week, not a reason to tell the ad platform that all 40 were wins.

What is the Monday test?

Run it on any Monday, with last week's numbers, before you buy anything.

  1. 01Open one report for last week and read off the WhatsApp taps, call taps and form submits, by page and by campaign.
  2. 02Open your lead log and count last week's real enquiries from the same three routes.
  3. 03Compare the two counts. Taps run higher than chats, so look for a steady gap and the same top page and campaign in both.
  4. 04Name the page and campaign behind the most chats. If you cannot, fix the tagging first.

If you can name the page and the campaign from one report, and the log names the same ones, you do not need a tracking number yet. If you cannot, the problem is the tagging, and no tracking number fixes tags that are missing.

No lead log yet? Start one this week. A shared sheet is enough: date, name, how they reached you (WhatsApp, call, form or property portal), and the campaign if they say. Each broker adds a row when a chat starts, so follow-up stops living only in personal phones. Leads from the portals reach your brokers without touching your website, so they show up in the log and never in the site report. The site report covers your own pages: a launch page, a clinic site.

The Monday test: read taps by campaign, count enquiries in the lead log, compare, name the top page and campaign
The Monday test: taps by campaign against the lead log.

What will Mindcat Analytics not do?

Say it before the price. Mindcat Analytics does not sell tracking numbers, record calls or report whether a call was answered. It does not see inside WhatsApp. It builds no ad audiences, does no remarketing and sends no signals to Google Ads bidding. If you need those, keep Google Analytics (GA4) for them.

What it does is count taps on the buttons we tag during setup: WhatsApp, call, form, booking or brochure, up to five per website. Your developer can add more with one attribute. Counts show by campaign through UTM tags (short labels at the end of an ad link that name the campaign), and QR codes and WhatsApp lines can use short links with their own click counts. The page itself says it counts the visits and clicks you tag, and does not set your marketing goals.

If your clinic or launch site gets its leads by call and WhatsApp and nobody can say which ad did it, Mindcat Analytics counts the taps by campaign and keeps the data in the UAE or Saudi Arabia.
The screen below is sample data for a sample launch site, from our page, not a client.

The script sets no cookies by default. Whether your site needs a consent banner is a question for your counsel, and we never call a website compliant because of a tool. The questions to bring to your lawyer are in our post on GDPR for a UAE website. The naming sheet that keeps your campaign tags clean is in who names the campaigns.

How do we decide with a clinic or a broker site?

Our method is called Counted in the region. We start with the Monday test on your site as it stands. We read where the WhatsApp, call and form buttons sit, which ads send people to them, and where the chats are answered. Then we say whether tap counts are enough or whether a tracking number is the better buy. If a tracking number is, we say so and do not quote.

For a broker's launch site the first tags are usually the WhatsApp tap and the register-interest form. For a clinic they are the booking button and the call tap. For a clinic, where the data stays matters most. We keep it in the UAE and give you the list of what the script sends, so your counsel can decide the rest.

What does it cost?

Here is what the Analytics page says today. You pay per website a month. A website is one site or domain, and the Arabic and English versions of one site count once. Logins are free and unlimited.

  • Websites 1 to 5: AED or SAR 99 each. 6 to 20: 39. 21 to 100: 19. 101 and up: 12.
  • The shared plan, hosted by us in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, has a minimum of AED/SAR 499 a month, for up to five websites. Each website includes up to 200,000 events a month (page views plus the clicks we track), pooled.
  • The quick start is a fixed AED/SAR 2,500 that we set up, for the shared plan up to five websites.
  • Billed at cost, outside the website price: a paid geo database if your copy needs one, and any outside service you ask us to buy for you.

Annual prepay takes 15 percent off. Prices exclude 5 percent UAE VAT and 15 percent Saudi VAT. See prices and the comparison on the page.

Tell us how many websites you run and where your visitors are. We reply with the setup plan and the monthly price per website, in AED or SAR.

FAQ

Questions teams ask next

What is call tracking?
Call tracking rents you virtual phone numbers that forward to your real phone. Each number, or a number the site swaps in depending on how the visitor arrived, tells you which source a call came from. Samverse, a small-business guide updated in October 2026, describes it this way. It is different from counting taps on a call button, which shows intent only.
Is counting call button taps the same as tracking calls?
No. A tap on a tel: link shows that someone meant to call. It does not show that the call connected or was answered. A guide from Vasuyashii (March 2026) says a tel: click is measurable but the completed call usually needs a separate call-tracking provider or a CRM process.
Can a website see what happens after someone taps the WhatsApp button?
It sees the tap and nothing after it. Tony Helmy, an analytics writer, says the site cannot see whether the visitor sent a message or became a customer, because that happens inside WhatsApp. Count the tap by page and campaign, and record the source in your inbox or CRM when the chat starts.
When should a small site buy call tracking numbers?
When answered calls are your main source of business and each job is valuable, when you spend across several channels, when you run offline ads, or when several staff take calls and need a shared log. Samverse lists those four. Before that, tag your buttons and ask every caller how they found you.
Does Mindcat Analytics track phone calls?
No. It counts taps on call, WhatsApp, form and other buttons that we tag, up to five per website during setup, and shows them by campaign. It does not record calls, report call length or sell tracking numbers. Prices start at AED or SAR 99 per website a month, with a shared minimum of AED/SAR 499. Prices exclude 5 percent UAE VAT and 15 percent Saudi VAT.
